Assassin’s Creed Unity is a 2014 action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The plot is set in a fictional history of real world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The story is set in Paris during the French Revolution; the single-player story follows Arno Dorian in his efforts to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. The game retains the series’ third-person open world exploration as well as introducing a revamped combat, parkour and stealth system. The game also introduces cooperative multiplayer to the Assassin’s Creed series, letting up to four players engage in narrative-driven missions and explore the open-world map.

The comedy of errors that is Assassin's Creed Unity doesn't seem to be ending any time soon, but now things are getting downright bizarre. The game has now reached its fourth major patch, appropriately named Patch 4, where the first one was the day one update meant to fix all the known problems that were shipped with the game. But as we now know, there was plenty more wrong with Unity than just those initial fixes, so Ubisoft has been cranking out patches ever since in an effort to stabilize things.Patch 4 is the biggest update to the game yet at 6.7 GB, and it's so huge Ubisoft had to explain exactly why that was.
'Part of the team's effort to enhance frame rate for players involves replacing and updating portions of the Paris city map where we are seeing issues. This explains the large size of this title update (6.7 GB). However, since a large portion of the patch replaces existing files the net increase to the game's overall size will be less than 6.7 GB.'
In other words, the framerate issues in the game were so insurmountable, they had to literally replace parts of the map outright to fix them. I'm not sure I've ever seen that before, but Unity is a pioneer in next-gen bugs, so anything's possible.
And yet, the story doesn't end there. Ubisoft's enormous patch has itself experienced a bug, an error where some Xbox One players are trying to download what they expect to be a big 6.7 GB patch, and finding the entire 40 GB game trying to download and reinstall itself. Kotaku first reported on this last night and thought it might just be a display error, but Ubisoft issued another statement confirming it was not.
'We have received and confirmed reports that some Xbox One players who have previously applied Patch 3 are seeing a 40GB download instead of the expected 6.7GB download. Unfortunately, an issue with the patch downloading process is replacing the entire game instead of just the parts affected by the patch. This is obviously not the expected behavior, and we apologize that many of you will have to wait longer than expected to complete this download. This issue isn't causing any other problems and once the download is completed players will have the most-up-to-date and fully patched version of Assassin's Creed Unity.

Currently there is one known workaround: Owners of the disc version of the game can uninstall the game and reinstall it. On starting the game, the patch process will start with the correct download size.'
This would be hilarious if it wasn't so sad. Assassin's Creed Unity is so irredeemable, that Xbox One has apparently decided on its own free will the entire game needs to be scrapped and reassembled from scratch. I feel like I'm writing a gaming-themed stand-up comedy routine at this point.

Assassin's Creed Unity Review
Assassin's Creed Unity Patch
The Fight For The Future Of Video Games is a warts-and-all look at the clashes between the video game business and its passionate fans.
So literally, the only way to fix your version of Assassin's Creed Unity is to endure this 40 GB download which will effectively replace the entire game, or uninstall the disc version of the game, and reinstall it, which can be a lengthy process itself. But it seems digital downloading Xbox One players experiencing this error are straight up out of luck, bandwidth caps and download speeds be damned. This may be a fairly large amount of people, given that Microsoft has been heavily plugging an Xbox One bundle which comes with a digital copy of AC: Unity. Microsoft can't be pleased given how much they've promoted this partnership with Ubisoft for the game. And their other major Xbox One bundle? The also non-working Halo: Master Chief Collection.
It's amazing to me that just when you think the Assassin's Creed Unity mess couldn't get any worse, Ubisoft slams headfirst into another brick wall like this. It's like taking your lemon of a car to the shop, and then watching as the mechanics start building you a new one from scratch while you wait, rather than bothering to fix the specific issues.
There's almost nothing more to even say at this point. In Ubisoft's quest to maximize profits with rushed-out, yearly Assassin's Creed titles, they may have irreparably damaged the brand. Unity was problematic even in concept, but in execution it's been an unmitigated disaster the likes of which a major AAA game hasn't seen possibly...ever. We've endured connectivity problems with online games before which is its own genre of annoying, but the core game of Unity is so broken it's taken four enormous patches to try and get it even close to where it should have been at launch, and now the patches themselves are spawning their own never-before-seen errors to the surprise and amazement of all.
It's beyond unacceptable and just downright ludicrous at this point. If anyone on earth preorders Assassin's Creed Victory next year after this, there's no hope for the gaming public. Not one person should buy a copy of the game unless the united press (after hopefully a solid two weeks playing the game pre-launch) declares it in perfect working order, and even then fans should be wary. Unity must be the tipping point where fans have to realize that pre-ordering games does nothing but allow developers to release broken products, and the vicious cycle can only end with consumers saying 'no more' by keeping their cash in hand until a game has proven that it actually works as intended at launch.
